This piece is about that individual with a substance-use disorder / addiction. Addiction is a disease—and a disease that has a ‘way out’. The problem is that you can’t see the way out when you are trapped in it (the red bird in the ribcage). And others (all the other birds) don’t understand why you don’t just ‘come out’ or ‘stop’. This is very personal for me as I spent many years struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Now recovered, I try to help others who are stuck in their own unlocked prisons.
